Ab-original music. 8 Days in May, Eh! Urban Gatherings goes beyond the powwow, showcasing emerging and established Indigenous artists.“When it comes down to it, Aboriginal or not, we are artists first and music’s music. By doing this event, I’m hoping the pigeonholing that’s happened to Aboriginal artists will dissipate and people will see that Aboriginal music isn’t just fiddles, jigging and powwows. There are all sorts of contemporary music that comes from Aboriginals.”
With such diversity, prepare to be pow-wowed! Speaking of Aboriginal Eh-mazement, that’s exactly how Dustin Harder felt when he met many of the musicians involved in the festival.
“I met most of them at AMP Camp,” Harder says, speaking of Manitoba Music’s Aboriginal Music Program camp in Gimli. “I was one of 20 artists from across Canada chosen to go and I was blown away by the talent, just truly blown away. I thought ‘How come I haven’t heard of these people? I’ve had my ear to the ground of the Canadian music scene for 15 years.’ This event is one way people will hear these names. It’s just about helping the community.”
This May 2012 will be The 3rd Annual 8 Days in May. Eh! Urban Gatherings. And will be held on May 4,5,11,12,18,19,20,25,and a special 9th day on the 26 at Various Venues across Winnipeg, Manitoba Canada.

When Dustin Rene Antoine Harder was just 19 years old, he hitchhiked his way from Winnipeg to Dawson City, Yukon to pursue his grandfather’s dream of panning for gold. Along the way he supported himself by busking. He found more than just gold in the Yukon. He discovered his first love: music. He has since turned his love & passion for sharing live music into the Annual “8 Days in May. Eh! Urban Gatherings”.Following up on a it’s inception and overwhelming success in 2010, Harder says they have expanded the 3rd year to include artists from outside of the province and country as well. “We’re bringing in Leanne Goose(NWT) Ross Neilsen(NL)Gabriel Ayala (U.S.A) and British Columbia’s Cris Derksen. She is this amazing Cree cellist. She takes her instrument that is generally thought of as an orchestra instrument and turns it into something you can groove to,” says Harder, who is also Métis.
’8 Days in May’ takes place at several venues around Winnipeg including: The Windsor Hotel-Regal Beagle -Le Garage Café -Pyramid Caberet- Juss Jazz from May 4th to May 25th. “I decided to go with so many venues because I wanted to showcase Winnipeg’s live music venues and change it up every night for audiences. Someone may not want to come downtown, but may venture out to St. Boniface for a show,” says Harder.
Not only are there a variety of venues to choose from, there are a variety of musical genres as well. “We’ll be mixing it up every night with everything from Blues and Roots to Rock to Instrumental to Folk and Country to Heavy Metal and Hip Hop. So there will definitely be something for everyone,” enthuses Harder.

THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER
Canadian Ritual Tour
with EXHUMED and FUCK THE FACTSand special local guests RUINS
The Black Dahlia Murder will renew their campaign across North America on May 11th in Madison, WI. The Canadian Ritual Tour will criss-cross Canada in its entirety before ending in their hometown of Detroit, MI on June 2nd. Support on the tour will come from Canada’s own Fuck the Facts and Exhumed.
The Black Dahlia Murder have already toured Thailand, Indonesia, Philippines and Japan, with dates in New Zealand Japan, Soundwave Festival in Australia and are about to embark on a headlining tour of the US with Nile, Skeletonwitch and Hour Of Penance.
The Black Dahlia Murder’s video for Moonlight Equilibrium is now live at www.metalblade.com/bdm! The video is a David Brodsky-directed nod to old-school horror films with a much more graphic approach. The video’s content aptly fits the lycanthropic lyric concept set against a bawdy Victorian back drop. The result: a chilling and entertaining slice of mini-horror that metal fans and horror-enthusiasts will enjoy.

UMFM & Lo Pub Present: YAMANTAKA // SONIC TITAN w/Scab Smoker8:00 pm – 12:00 am
Spring Time Show Time!
YAMANTAKA // SONIC TITAN:
Y//ST’s sound lies in their uninhibited admixture of East and West, their commingling of the band’s ancestral musics with more contemporary genres to explore the complications and contradictions of dual identity. By simultaneously inhabiting a variety of cultural forms, the band shatters the comfort with which colonialist cultures have appropriated the image and art of Asian and First Nations peoples to assemble a wholly new hybrid form. This is Noh-Wave, and it draws from both pop and J-pop, British prog and Japanese psychedelia, punk rock and Iroquois core, black metal and Chinese Opera, noise music and Noh theatre. The resultant sounds could be seductively soft or electrifyingly loud, but they’re invariably the stuff of a visionary new approach to popular music.
Scab Smoker:
A power trio which sways from down-tempo doom to British Heavy Metal, and their drummer’s tape manipulations are the glue that holds it all together? If the tectonic shifts don’t diminish you with a blink, nervous hums will creep up through eerie non-sequiturs and form pustules on any clean mind — infectious stoner metal in its newest mutation, perversion, persuasion, enticing all to bang head, bang head, bang head.

Wham! Bam! Rock & Roll!
Mitten Party!
Vancouver’s Wintermitts are bringing their genre blending pop rock to the Lo Pub!
Wintermitts: They sing in French and English. They rock out on trumpets and accordions. They waltz when they need to and they’re as absorbing (and comforting!) as you’d hope a winter mitten would be.
Opening the show is Winnipeg’s very own Mitten Claps. An exactly band! With a brand new EP! Mitten Claps rely on spastic, complex percussion; angular, intricate instrumentation; and melodic vocal lines to create a sound bigger than the sum of two parts.

Sound Republic, Local Advancers and Bassface Entertainment presents…MT EDEN : THE PERFECT STORM TOUR
www.mtedenofficial.com | facebook.com/mtedendubstep | twitter.com/mtedenofficial | youtube.com/user/mtedendnb08What started as a hobby in their early teens (they were 13 and 14 when they started mixing together on their computers), has morphed into international success for the pair, who only started posting their music online after a friend created a YouTube channel for them in early 2010. Within months their total hit count was in the millions and rising – all of a sudden the bedroom producers and amateur DJs were staring down the barrel of international renown, and feeling appropriately blown away.
Mt Eden’s shows are built around moments – extended build-ups, drum solos, double and triple drops – the focus always being to generate momentum and keep the crowd in the right frame of mind. Featuring a lot of unreleased material – including their own unreleased bootlegs, unheard edits of their own tunes and unreleased tracks from other artists – every Mt Eden set is a unique journey. “We have always played a good mixture of light and dark, so it can be an uplifting and gut-wrenching journey all at the same time,” elaborates Cooper.
Reflecting on the events of the past year Rayner says, “We didn’t expect any of this to happen, and we are still overwhelmed by it.” They better get their heads around it soon, because this rollercoaster ride is already well underway.

Thinking About Justice Book Launch6:30 pm – 9:30 pm
How do we think about justice? Is it an act? An ideology? A philosophy? We are divided in our understandings of justice between those who seek fundamental social change versus those who seek incremental change and between those who argue that justice exists versus those who think it is a ruse — between internal and external perspectives. However, a promising axis of scholarship aimed at bridging these divides is emerging. Thinking about Justice introduces readers to these three ways of thinking about justice in a variety of contexts including prisons, policing, the courts, youth crime, Aboriginal people, the media, poverty and work in the sex industry. Ultimately, Thinking about Justice seeks to embrace the potentialities of justice, to explore the avenues through which justice seekers interact, debate and achieve some mode of cohesion and find a new, inclusive way forward.
Join us for a discussion with authors Kelly Gorkoff, faculty member in the Department of Criminal Justice at the University of Winnipeg and a doctoral student in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at Carleton University & Richard Jochelson, faculty member in the Department of Criminal Justice at the University of Winnipeg and holds his PhD in law from Osgoode Hall.

Telephoned was born one night in Brooklyn when DJ/producer Sammy Bananas and singer/party starter Maggie Horn decided to record their own version of T-Pain’s “Can’t Believe It.” Their track was neither remix nor cover – instead, the duo fashioned a postmodern take on both, warping the original beat into a hypnotic club track and bringing out the dreamy qualities only hinted at in Pain’s auto-tuned melodies. Sammy and Maggie’s fresh “Can’t Believe It” quickly became a DJ favorite – even making it into mix rotation on LA hip-hop station Power 106! – so they decided to keep recording as a team, cleverly named after the kids game of Telephone: no faithful copies, just a party line of unexpected twists.
Over the past two years, the duo have expanded the concept as they continue to churn out instantly addictive and massively charming covers, create genre-bashing mixtapes and perform their non-stop whirlwind live show on stages across the world. To promote the release of their self titled EP on Fool’s Gold in Winter ’10, Telephoned compiled a mix modeled in the tradition of rap street tapes. On “Off The Hook” Bananas selects recognizable instrumentals from dance and hip-hop while Horn sings other songs on top of them, a combination the group christen the “cover-up”.
Telephoned’s energetic, mixtape-dance-party of a live show got the attention of prestigious website Pitchfork, who called their performance in Austin,TX “the most fun thing at SXSW.” Electro-revivalists Chromeo caught wind of the act, inviting the duo to join them on their “Business Casual” tour this August, making stops in over 20 cities while performing to packed venues across the US and Canada. Bananas and Horn released their second mixtape “Keep Their Heads Ringin” just before hitting the road, and reveled in handing CDs out for free to fans after performing each night.
The pair are poised to further expand the scope of Telephoned with their forthcoming 7″ and digital release on Scion A/V in late November. “Hold Me” is the first entirely original song born out of the collaboration, but their mission statement hasn’t changed considering the fact they chose to cover themselves for the b-side of the record, “Telephoning” the original uptempo funky track into a smoothed out alt-country tune. Telephoned survives off of transforming and mutating songs through their own lens, and thats the only rule to play the game.

PUBLIC ART AND YOU: A Mini-Symposium9:00 am – 12:00 pm
Co-presented with the Winnipeg Arts Council and MAWA
Free! All welcome! Lunch included!Do you see calls for public art commissions and think, “that’s not for me”? Think again! In order for there to be great public art in our communities, it is essential that artists put themselves and their ideas forward. Public art can be a part of any artist’s practice. It is simply another venue, another canvas and another site we can use to articulate ourselves. Public art can take many forms: community-based interactive projects, sculptures, performance interventions… There is no reason you should not take up public space! Learn more about public art by attending this day-long public art how-to forum featuring experienced artists who have all recently completed projects through the Winnipeg Arts Council’s Public Art Program. And there’s a free pizza lunch!
This is also a golden opportunity to hear artists Germaine Koh (Vancouver), Sarah Crawley and Christine Fellows speak about their fascinating work.
For a full event schedule please check out MAWA’s website: mawa.ca/lectures/symposia/

SHINDIG!: KING CABERNET VS. THE INVISIBLE MAN!8:00 pm – 1:00 am
This has been a long time coming, folks.
It was Mod Club Winnipeg’s Invisible Man who gave DJ Cabernet his first break, and bequeathed upon him the monicker Cabernet and helped show him the basics of being an awesome DJ.
In the past two years Cabernet has turned Shindig! into one of the coolest nights in Winnipeg and has let this fact go to his head: Ditching the DJ prefix in favour of declaring himself King Cabernet.
It’s time for the master to show his pupil how it’s really done. Two DJs trading set vs. set of musical awesomeness. There can only be one victor.
Loser gets his head shaven.
PLUS: They Call Him MISTER Mulligan!
He’s the C.E.O. and D.J. of Winnipeg’s Natural Funk Company. (UMFM 101.5 FM, Saturday 4pm – 6pm) and he’s doing a special warm up set or two for Shindig! To get the party started. Come early people, this is going to be one epic hipshaker of a night!

A fundraiser for River Run 2012 – Good Peeps/Good Cause10:30 am – 10:00 pm
On Sunday, May 27 Hope Mennonite will host a fundraiser towards the travel costs of indigenous participants, including members of Grassy Narrows First Nation, to join River Run 2012. This series of events (June 5-8) in Toronto will generate public awareness and political pressure around the social and environmental costs of mercury contamination in northwestern Ontario. Mercury poisoning has widely affected the fishing livelihoods and physical well-being of First Nation communities in the region.
River Run 2012 is a great opportunity to show your support and to join us in the fight to protect Indigenous rights and the water, air, land, and creatures that we all depend on. Migwetch.

The Scatch: HAS CHANGED
THIS JUST IN: WE HAVE BEEN INFORMED THAT WE CAN’T HAVE A BINGO AT THIS LOCATION. SO, WE’LL FEED YOU, SHOW A CLIP FROM A FILM, RAFFLE BAKING, HAVE A GREAT SILENT AUCTION AND STAY TUNED FOR POTENTIAL LIVE MUSIC ANNOUNCEMENT. ALL FOR THE SAME GREAT CAUSE!
Here’s the plan….
SOUP FEAST
Chuck and his brother are rustling up a savoury broth. Enjoy a bowl of hearty soup! ($5 for bowl; $10 for a family)
SILENT AUCTION
for the beautiful prints that have been donated as well as some of the great prizes Tessa has pulled together. JACQUELINE TRAVERSE is donating three amazing prints of her artwork for raffle — friend her as Creeative Native on fb and check out her work!
SCARS OF MERCURY FILM SHORT – MEET THE MAIN MAN….
PRODUCER Tadashi Orui will show a short clip from his film about Grassy Narrows, Scars of Mercury at 11AM and say a few words before soup being served at around 11:30ish. Unique opportunity to hear from the producer about his many years following this story and it’s connection to his birthplace, Japan.
RAFFLE
for baking ($1 per ticket; $3 for 5; $5 for 10),
All sorts of great raffling donations already supplied through Tessa Blaikie and others. How’s this? Bring something you’d like to share — a piece of art, a poem, for a song? A recipe? A story? A letter to our singers and drummers, well wishes or thoughts/words for our travellers? We’ll include it in the raffle. $5 is all you’ll need to go home with something if we all contribute.
If everyone can hustle in 10-15 dollars minimum, we can considerably contribute to fuel and food costs for our friends traveling over the land to make an important statement to Queen Elizabeth II’s representatives in Toronto. And to our friends and families in the GTA. Please encourage folks there to meet and speak with Judy Da Silva and companions and to help them in their goals.
If anyone wants to speak OR PLAY SOME LIVE TUNES at this fundraiser, please notify Chuck. Chuck is your man for logistics on this one. polepole_w@yahoo.ca
Ryan is listed as one of the fb host for this event but will be out with Don and Roberta on their trapline that week. Please contact Chuck. polepole_w@yahoo.ca which is quite the provocative handle if I don’t say so myself, there Chuck :]
Have fun! Enjoy my bread and cookies. Chocolate chip and I don’t skimp on chips; Ryan.

An Evening with Garnet Rogers @ The West End Cultural Centre7:00 pm – 10:00 pm
Among the most significant folk stars working today.
- Boston GlobeAt an early age, and barely out of high school, GARNET ROGERS was on the road as a full-time working musician with his older brother STAN ROGERS. Together they formed what has come to be accepted as one of the most influential acts in North American folk music.
An optimist at heart, Garnet sings extraordinary songs about people who are not obvious heroes and of the small victories of the everyday. As memorable as his songs, his over-the-top humour and lightning-quick wit moves his audience from tears to laughter and back again.

SOUL OF THE SEA Screening6:00 pm – 9:00 pm
SOUL OF THE SEA (Canada, 2012, 52 minutes)
South Georgia stands alone in the path of relentless storms and high winds in the South Atlantic Ocean. It’s the final resting place of famed explorer Ernest Shackleton and a place whose savage beauty has captivated wilderness guide and expedition leader Hayley Shephard for more than 10 years.
SOUL OF THE SEA follows Hayley, a 40-year old New Zealand-born Canadian, pursuing her dream to solo kayak around South Georgia in crashing waves and treacherous seas to bring awareness to an endangered seabird – the albatross.
A story of solitary endurance, passion and survival, it’s an intimate look at one woman’s quest to find her place in the world.
Shot against the dramatic backdrop of rugged peaks and stunning glaciers, trumpeting penguins and an abundance of wildlife, SOUL OF THE SEA examines what exploration means today and why bearing witness in extreme places is vital to our contemporary world.

Rah Rah w/Modern Romantics8:00 pm – 11:00 pm
The online dictionary defines Rah Rah as “ardently enthusiastic” I describe Rah Rah as being one of the best bands the praires has produced in a long long time!
But really Rah Rah is Regina, Saskatchewan’s expansive rock collective. Rah Rah have truly fine-tuned the essence of the band and refined the maturity of their sound. If Arcade Fire is musically informed by Springsteen, Rah Rah draws a musical footnote from Neil Young while weaving an endlessly impressive amount of contemplation and maturity into their heart-on-their-sleeve pop songs. This is a band not to miss!
opening the show we have Winnipeg’s very own Modern Romantics. Modern Romantics began as a collaborative effort between husband and wife duo Korbin and Paula Potosky shortly after their marriage in 2008. After the birth of their first child, with little in the way of time and space, the couple began an at-home recording project. Now Modern Romantics is a four headed beast of incredible indie rock synth bliss.
Tickets are $8 in advance. Tickets will go on sale by the end of the week! Get’m quick this shows gonna be nuts!

Sweet Alibi Homecoming show with The Strumbellas7:00 pm – 10:00 pm
The Park Presents
Sweet Alibi Home Coming Show
Wednesday May 30th, 2012
w/ The Strumbellas
Tickets $12.50 in advanceThree stunning voices, one great band – Sweet Alibi returns home to Winnipeg after their western Canadian tour. Since their debut in the spring of 2009, Sweet Alibi has been captivating audiences with their alluring blend of soulful melody and folk/roots tradition. Playful sense of lyricism set to powerful vocal harmony set the stage for a performance which is up front and personal and instinctively compelling.
Drawing influence from a vast array of musical references, Sweet Alibi apply a quirky pop sensibility to an eclectic set. Songs range in mood from hauntingly provocative ballads to left of centre takes on everything from Country to old school RnB. Backing their vocals with electric guitars, banjos, hand percussion, ukuleles, upright bass, kazoos and whatever else they can get their hands on, Sweet Alibi compliment a diverse set with an equally eclectic instrumentation.
Comprised of three core members (Jessica Rae Ayre, Amber Neilsen, and Michelle Anderson), and backed by an array of Winnipeg’s finest musicians, the group performs steadily both as a stripped down trio and with a fully fleshed out rhythm section. The band has shared the stage with many of Manitoba’s folk/roots community and have performed everywhere from intimate coffee houses and mainstay clubs to outdoor concert series and festivals (including an appearance at The Winnipeg Folk Festival). Having finished their highly anticipated self-titled debut album with Juno award winner Mitch Dorge, Sweet Alibi are currently touring their album across Canada including this stop at the Park Theatre on May 30th in Winnipeg.
Supporting the night are Toronto’s newest hit makers The Stumbellas. Having received rave reviews, CBC called them a “band to watch”, while their 2009 EP was well-reviewed across the blogosphere and in Now Magazine. February 2012 saw the release of their highly anticipated debut album, “My Father and The Hunter.” This is the band’s first ever show in Manitoba.

B.A. Johnston w/Ketamines, Atomic Don & the Black Sunrise, Microdot8:00 pm – 11:00 pm
B.A. Johnston and The Ketamines are going on tour together!
Its the appropriately titled, “Super Rad Death Tour 2000″
There are a few constants that come with living in Canada. There are bitter, evil winters, a never-ending rainbow of depressing Tim Hortons coffee shops, and an album from Hamilton entertainer B.A. Johnston every year or so. This happens to be one of those years.
B.A. Johnston is a live act not to miss. The’ll be sweat, most likely blood and most likely tears from B.A. himself. B.A. will do handstands, he will do the worm, and he will make you feel uncomfortable.
About Ketamines: Ketamines are not an oldies group, they are not a glitter group, they don’t play boogie music and they don’t play the blues.
About Atomic Don: Made up of pieces of The Angry Dragons, Microdot and Pop Crimes, Atomic Don crawled out of a pile of radioactive goo last Halloween to deliver 5000 roentgens of heavy pop straight to your central nervous system.
About Microdot: Winnipeg’s noise-pop practitioners Microdot include members from the Angry Dragons and Atomic Don & the Black Sunrise, among others. In May 2011, U.S. radio station WFMU named Microdot as a new artist of the day.
